Pete Tong is one of the most legendary DJs and voices in dance music. His Essential Mix radio show on BBC Radio 1 is one of the most streamed and listened to weekly EDM broadcasts. Pete has seen the industry change from an underground escape to a worldwide sensation. Through it all, he has been the voice of electronic dance music, many times making sense of tragedy as much as debuting new music.
This week the International Music Summit is being held in Ibiza. All of the dance music industry’s most influential members have descended upon the island to discuss where the genre is going, as well as potential concerns. Needless to say with the untimely passing of Avicii, mental health was discussed at length.
Pete Tong On Avicii
While Pete Tong spoke at length on many topics his tribute to Avicii has been making the most headlines. Following his talk and tribute, a panel discussed the ever-growing concern of mental health in the dance music world. Young kids are finding fame and thrust into an unsustainable life where managers and labels are using them for financial gain…this, in turn, has made rates of anxiety and depression explode in the electronic music world. While many genres are demanding on artists, none require international touring as much as EDM.
The most pertinent quote from Pete Tong’s speech is this:
“WE WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO DIE CHASING THE DREAM”
Once again, rest in peace Tim. Your music will live on forever. If you or a loved one is struggling with depression for suicidal ideation please reach out or use a resource below.
