Authorities Confirm Homicide Near Solomun Event in Tulum; Investigation Ongoing

Authorities in Quintana Roo, Mexico have confirmed that a fatal shooting occurred near the site of Solomun’s performance at Tehmplo in Tulum on January 8, 2026, prompting an official homicide investigation by the state’s Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE).

In a public statement, the FGE of Quintana Roo announced the opening of a criminal investigation for qualified homicide following the death of a male temporary worker who was killed by gunshot wounds on a dirt road near where the music event was taking place.

According to the statement, the victim was not an attendee, and authorities emphasized that the incident did not put the safety of event participants at risk. Officials also stated that federal, state, and municipal agencies are working together to identify and apprehend those responsible for what they described as a direct attack.

“As a main line of investigation, the Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing a possible link between the incident and drug-dealing activities, without ruling out other hypotheses,” the FGE said in Spanish, adding that the state remains committed to ensuring accountability and justice.

Solomun was scheduled to headline the event at Tehmplo Tulum as part of the venue’s 2026 season programming. Following the event, some online discussion threads and social posts described attendees hearing what they believed were gunshots and experiencing confusion or disruption amid the crowd. One Reddit thread referenced people suddenly running, mentions of “balazos” (Spanish for shootings), and reports of security or police presence near exits.

Comments in the same Reddit thread also reflect conflicting accounts, with some individuals stating they were present at the event and did not witness any shooting or injuries, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding what occurred inside the venue itself.

At this time, authorities have not confirmed any violence occurring within the event perimeter, and no injuries or deaths among attendees have been reported by police or emergency services. The official investigation currently centers on a targeted homicide outside the event area, with no evidence so far indicating that the incident was directly connected to the performance or posed danger to the crowd.
