Brooklyn’s Bossa Nova Civic Club to shut for “notable amount of time” following severe fire
Brooklyn venue Bossa Nova Civic Club will be shut for a “notable amount of time” after a catastrophic fire in its building, it has been announced.
On Wednesday night (12th January), a fire broke out on the third floor of the building that houses the beloved club. While the fire did not reach the ground floor, where the club is situated, the venue faced a “tremendous amount of damage”. The apartment where the fire broke was reportedly “completely obliterated”. According to an Instagram story shared by the club, one tenant in the building was seriously injured, while a dog belonging to another tenant did not survive the fire.
The club wrote on Instagram that “it’s safe to say we will be closed for a notable amount of time.”
The post continued: “We will update soon. Thank you so much for 9 years of support and friendship.”
A GoFundMe has been launched to raise funds for venue, staff and tenants of the building, with a goal of raising $300,000. Donate here.
A statement on the GoFundMe page reads: “This space is a second home to a lot of us and has cultivated many careers, friendships and chosen families. Bossa has endured but survived an extreme amount of adversities, during a pandemic no less. This level of harm needs the full backing of the community to restore. Please help us, thank you.”
The club, which is located on 1271 Myrtle Ave in Brooklyn, has been met with a huge outpouring of love since news broke of the catastrophic fire, with DJs, producers, promoters and labels such as Lauren Flax, Sorry Records, Discwoman, Bergsonist, DJ Swisha, ESP Institute, Ciel, BAE BAE, Juliana Huxtable and many more sharing their support for the venue on social media.
