Locals Whine as Miami Considers a New 20 Year Deal for Ultra Music Festival
As Bayfront Park is in the midst of its transformation into Ultra Music Festival 2026, a familiar drama is unfolding in Miami’s City Hall. Ultra Music Festival’s current contract with the City of Miami to host the festival in Bayfront Park each year is set to expire in 2027. The City of Miami is now considering a new proposal that would give Ultra Music Festival a 20-year deal to remain at Bayfront Park. As expected, the NIMBY locals are once again complaining and doing their best to get rid of or put increasing limits on the flagship festival.
The City posted a public notice for a virtual town hall on March 11 and a combined commission meeting on March 12 to debate the proposal. The deal calls for an initial 10-year term with an additional 10-year renewal option. The proposal would give Ultra Music Festival more time for setup and teardown at Bayfront. As it is now, Ultra gets a paltry 2 weeks from load-in to gates open to build the entire festival. Tomorrowland, on the other hand, takes over a month on its build-out. This change would be great for Ultra because it would allow for more sophisticated stages and layouts without having to rush the build process so much.
Locals Complain
The very same locals who cried because Ultra was allowed by the City to go an hour longer to make up for the rain-delayed start are whining once again. Even though Ultra is now forced to end at 10PM on Sunday and lower its sound levels, it is apparently still not enough for them. They complain about park closures, extended construction windows, and noise that affects their daily life near Bayfront Park. It’s unclear whether or not these residents are new to the area or if they were unaware that Ultra Music Festival takes place for 3 days a year in Bayfront Park before they moved in.
What’s Next
Due to the complaints by the locals, the vote which was originally scheduled to take place on March 12 was deferred to April 23, well after Ultra 2026 concludes and the park re-opens. For those of us who saw this drama play out in 2018, we will certainly be watching closely and encourage all of the dance music community to go on April 23 and make their voices heard so that all of the joy that Ultra brings is not drowned out by NIMBY locals. We look forward to seeing Ultra remain and prosper in Bayfront Park for many years to come.
