Interview with Turkish Trap Authority, Serhat Durmus, on ‘My Feelings’ featuring Georgia Ku
2018 saw the release of the Turkish trap and bass authority, Serhat Durmus‘ ‘Hislerim’. While the tones and filthy drop has spoken to millions of us and created fun moments on the dancefloor, the Turkish vocals has kept many Westerners from enjoying the song’s full effect.
Today brings the reimagined version, ‘My Feelings’, featuring the always welcomed hitmaker and singer, Georgia Ku, as heard on tracks by Zedd, Skrillex, Illenium, Cheat Codes and Kiiara as well as the platinum collaboration ‘Scared To Be Lonely‘ by Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa.
Honing in on shocking vocals that steal your heart and just sound so good hitting the ear, Georgia Ku, allows Serhat Durmus’ release to resonate with the world.
Alongside the release of ‘My Feelings’ we reached out for an exclusive interview with one of the only Turkish producers to ascend from the local scene, Serhat Durmus, where we discover more about the electronic music scene in Turkey, his select tracks, production techniques and whats next.
Enjoy more of Serhat’s discography that has mounted over 200 million streams as you enjoy the interview.
How did this collaboration for ‘My Feelings’ with Georgia Ku come into fruition?
“Hislerim” became very popular and I thought that if we would make an English version of it it might reach even more people out there. When I first heard Georgia’s voice, I was really shocked. Her voice and feel really fit the song and I felt it added a lot more spirit to the song than the original. I’m super happy we managed to make it even better than the original!
What are some production techniques you experimented with for ‘My Feelings’?
My signature sound is a combination of big atmospheric soundscapes and heavy bass sounds. In “My Feelings” I tried using a little less reverb and I tried to highlight the vocal more. I did the vocal mix very carefully because I think there is nothing that affects the song more than how the vocals cut through.
What are some of your favorite electronic music events and festivals in Turkey?
Çeşme’s Electronica Festival and the Big Burn festivals are definitely my best festival experiences so far. Would love to go to more!
What is one philosophy you like to live by?
Keep doing what you love and don’t give a damn about what others think.
I’ve never cared if people believed or believe in me, I just follow my dreams. Music has always guided me in the right direction. People who laugh at your dreams will come chasing after you when your dreams come true.
What are 5 tracks you find at the forefront of electronic music?
These are my old but always favourite songs;
1- Haterade – Warmonger 2- Stephen – Crossfire 3- KRANE – Dollar Sines 4- Chief Keef – Love Sosa (RL Grime Remix) 5- Sex Whales & Fraxo – Dead To Me (feat. Lox Chatterbox)
Curious, how is life in Turkey right now?
Too bad like most places these times. Corona locked everyone in their houses and all cafeterias, venues, restaurants, and shopping malls all have been closed for a long time. Unfortunately, this has also affected the economy badly. Apart from the pandemic, life is good and we all hope the situation will get back to normal as soon as possible.
Favorite dinner?
Answer: İskender kebab! Preferably at Baydöner in Izmir.
Whoa, that looks good! So, what is next for Serhat Durmus?
I am looking forward to touring and playing live. I have so many songs that I want to release too. Watch out for a lot of new music coming from me this year!
