Scottish DJ and radio host Niamh Jobson has died aged 22

Scottish DJ, producer, audio engineer and radio host Niamh Jobson has died at the age of 22, her family have confirmed.

Niamh passed away on Friday, January 17, in Hong Kong. Her family expressed “insurmountable pain”, calling Niamh a “hugely gifted, talented, intuitive, wise, fiercely clever, funny, sparkly, stunningly beautiful legend of a girl”.

Niamh Jobson was born in Hong Kong, but spent her younger years on the Isle of Eigg, a Scottish island populated by just 100 people. She later moved to Glasgow, where she took up work at the city’s famous nightclub Sub Club.

Inspired by Scottish nature and synthesisers, Niamh became involved in the city’s dance music scene where she both produced and played music, ranging from techno to dub.

From there, Niamh went on to become a figurehead of Glasgow’s dance music scene, honing her sound on radio shows, including her ‘Dub Series’ show with Kairogen, and gigs on local station Radio Buena Vida.

Niamh worked closely with Sub Club over the years, a venue where she met many of her “best pals”, performing at Slam’s famed ‘Return to Mono’ show, as well as the venue’s long-running club night Subculture.

“Inspirational, courageous, warm, talented, beautiful Niamh, our hearts are broken,” Sub Club said in tribute to the late artist. “In all our thoughts on your birthday and in our hearts eternally.”

While her cause of death was not confirmed, her family shared that funeral arrangements would be made in the coming weeks.

“Today (22nd) is her 23rd birthday,” her family said in a statement. “Please, wherever you are in the world, whatever you are doing, join us in celebrating our much loved Queen today.”
