Floatation Gets 35th Anniversary Reworks on Skint Records By Mark Barrott And More
The Grid’s 1990 classic Floatation is back in the spotlight with a new set of remixes from Mark Barrott and Made by Pete. Originally released at the height of the UK’s acid house explosion, Floatation became a defining Balearic track, cemented by its appearance in the cult documentary A Short Film About Chilling. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the single, BMG and Skint Records are rolling out a fresh set of interpretations that bring the track into new contexts while honoring its roots .
The Grid, made up of Soft Cell’s Dave Ball and producer Richard Norris, broke through with Floatation as their first hit. Its spoken-word vocals, ambient textures, and laidback percussion instantly connected with Ibiza’s emerging chill-out culture. For many, it remains one of the cornerstones of early ’90s downtempo and a track that helped define the beachside energy of that era.
Mark Barrott Brings Balearic Experience
Mark Barrott, founder of the influential International Feel label and curator of the La Torre compilations, contributes five reworks of the original. His Return to Sa Trinxa Remix references one of Ibiza’s legendary beach bars with a slow-building, eight-minute journey built on dreamy pads and drifting melodies. The God’s Cinema Sunset Re-Imagination expands the track into widescreen territory, layering synth textures with sweeping strings in a way that feels cinematic yet grounded.
Other mixes from Barrott include the Ibiza Sunrise ’90 Re-Work, a beatless version that leans fully into ambient tradition, as well as two stripped-down variations: the Somnolent Reprise with bird calls and ascending chords, and the Slo-Motion Reprise, which pares the track back to shifting tones and minimal movement. Together, these remixes highlight Barrott’s role as one of the leading voices in modern Balearic music and extend the legacy of Floatation into today’s downtempo culture .
