Paul Oakenfold: Bridging Trance and Techno with ‘Mission Underground’
Paul Oakenfold has spent decades moving electronic music forward, but his latest project, Mission Underground, finds him doing something more compelling than simply revisiting his storied history. Released on Perfecto Records, the album serves as a bridge, connecting the emotional architecture of classic trance with the harder, darker energy defining contemporary techno and underground dancefloors today. The result is both retrospective and forward-facing, as Oakenfold reinterprets familiar records and introduces new collaborations that position him firmly between generations.
A New Vision for Trance and Techno
Perfecto Records describes the project as a journey through the future of trance and techno. Recent singles from the album have featured a diverse array of collaborators, including Markus Schulz, Daxson, RAM, Marie Vaunt, Binary Finary, and ARGY. For Oakenfold, the concept was clear from the start: he wanted to take the classics he has championed for years and infuse them with a modern, techno-inspired twist.
“I’ve been in the trance and psy-trance space for many years, and I wanted to work with some of my favorite artists to give these classics a modern edge,” Oakenfold explains. When asked about the resurgence of trance with younger audiences, he notes that the 1990s provided a foundational era for dance music that continues to resonate. “I’m sharing those classics with a new interpretation that the younger generation can embrace. People are craving that kind of connection more than ever.”
The Art of Collaboration and Live Performance
The album balances new material with reimagined classics, a process Oakenfold approaches with careful respect for the original integrity of the tracks. “You have to showcase the major parts—the riff and the vocals—but with a modern twist. If you do it right, it works so well,” he says. This collaborative spirit extends to his live performances, where he adapts his sound for the dancefloor. “In a live environment, the rhythm needs to be tougher, so I was changing the drums, giving them a techno style, and adding darker elements.”
The Mission Underground North American Tour, which spans 17 markets across the United States and Canada, also features The Crystal Method on most dates. Oakenfold views the pairing as a natural evolution of their long-standing relationship. “I’ve always been a fan of Scott Kirkland. I recently remixed their track ‘Name of the Game,’ and the tour feels like a perfect complement for both of us.”
Looking Toward the Future
Beyond the music, Oakenfold is expanding his brand into the wellness space with Perfecto Wellness. He emphasizes that this is not merely a commercial venture but a reflection of his own lifestyle and experience. “Music is an integral part of the project because sound has the power to heal. It is focused on meditation, yoga, and inspiration, drawing on the knowledge I’ve gained over years of touring.”
As he looks back on a career that has seen him perform at iconic locations like Mt. Everest Base Camp and the Great Wall of China, Oakenfold remains driven by the same curiosity that started his journey. “It has never been about proving myself to anyone. I enjoy what I do, and I am always up for a challenge. I’m always looking for what’s next.”
