EDC Orlando’s Stadium Reveals Final Upgrade Design with Dynamic Skin
As anticipation builds for the return of EDC Orlando this November, the festival will mark the final edition before the venue undergoes a dramatic visual transformation. The DLR Group has officially finalized the design for the Camping World Stadium renovation, introducing a centerpiece that promises to redefine the stadium’s identity: a dynamic outer skin composed of 19 LED ribbons integrated into the east and west sideline walls.
The innovative design utilizes silver metal panels that act as diffusers, allowing the LED ribbons to display high-fidelity images and messages while maintaining a sleek, architectural surface. Each panel functions as an individual pixel, shielding the technology from Florida’s unpredictable weather while simultaneously illuminating the concourse after dark. During daylight hours, the metallic finish is engineered to reflect the sun, mirroring the aesthetic of the surrounding Orlando landscape. Beyond its visual impact, the skin serves a functional purpose, acting as the necessary hurricane bracing required by building codes.
A New Era for a Historic Venue
“They wanted to redefine the identity of the stadium, this new, contemporary destination,” explained Ryan Freeland, the sports design leader at DLR Group. The 90-year-old facility, which currently lacks a permanent tenant, is being reimagined as a versatile, high-tech destination capable of shifting its character to suit diverse events. With EDC Orlando drawing upwards of 100,000 daily attendees, the stadium’s ability to adapt is paramount.
The $400 million project, funded largely through Orange County’s tourist development tax, encompasses significant structural improvements. Beyond the facade, the renovation includes increasing the stadium’s capacity to over 65,000, replacing aging upper bowl bleachers with modern chairback seating, and constructing a new north end zone tower to link suite and terrace levels. Retractable seating in the south lower bowl will further enhance the venue’s utility for concert production, allowing for faster changeovers between major events.
Future-Proofing the Fan Experience
While the design has received approval, the city is currently in the process of selecting a contractor to execute the complex installation of the LED wall. Allen Johnson, the city’s chief venues officer, emphasized the importance of the exterior experience, noting, “More people see the outside of the venue than the inside. Why shouldn’t they get a special experience as well?”
Construction is proceeding on a phased schedule to ensure that events, including the upcoming EDC Orlando 2026—headlined by David Guetta, Martin Garrix, and Hardwell—can continue without interruption. While the festival will proceed as planned this November, the 2027 edition is expected to be the first to showcase the completed, illuminated skin, marking a new chapter for one of the East Coast’s premier event destinations.
