Burning Man Attendee Rescued After Falling From 55-Foot Tower
A Burning Man attendee required a complex and high-stakes rescue after falling from a 55-foot-tall structure at Black Rock City on Tuesday. The incident occurred at the Square One camp, where emergency responders were called to the scene at approximately 6:20 p.m. on September 1.
According to witnesses, the individual had fallen two levels from near the top of the camp’s 10-level Nest Tower. Bystanders reported that the man struck a metal crossbar during his descent, sustaining potential injuries to his head, ribs, and hip. While official details regarding the severity of his condition remain limited, the rescue operation itself was a logistical challenge.
Responders were forced to climb the structure to stabilize the man while a secondary crew cleared the area below. A construction vehicle equipped with an aerial platform was then utilized to reach his position, allowing crews to safely lower him to the playa. Once on the ground, medical personnel transferred him to a gurney before transporting him to Rampart, the festival’s temporary hospital facility.
A Complicated Rescue on Tutu Tuesday
The accident took place during the festival’s well-known “Tutu Tuesday” tradition, where participants across Black Rock City wear tutus. In a surreal turn of events, many of the emergency responders involved in the rescue were also dressed in tutus as they performed the delicate extraction.
Camp leaders Lee and Gaby Merschon noted that the Nest Tower has been a fixture at the event since 2021. They confirmed that while the structure has grown in height over the years, this incident marked the first injury associated with the installation.
This event highlights the unique medical challenges inherent to the Black Rock Desert, where large-scale art and temporary infrastructure create a landscape vastly different from traditional festival environments. Falls from elevated structures have been a recurring concern; in 2024, attendee Rachael Gingery suffered significant injuries after falling from an art installation, though she eventually made a full recovery.
Burning Man Continues Through a Difficult Week
The rescue occurred during a particularly challenging week for the Burning Man community. Beyond the accident, organizers have contended with severe weather, as heavy rains transformed the playa into thick mud, forcing temporary closures of the event’s entrance and airport.
Tragically, the festival also confirmed the death of a participant in his mid-50s following a separate medical emergency on September 3. Despite these disruptions and the ongoing safety concerns, Burning Man is scheduled to continue through September 7. As of the time of reporting, the Burning Man Project has not released further updates regarding the condition of the attendee who fell from the Nest Tower.
