Exquis MPE Controller Gets Major Update: Firmware 2.2.0 Adds Key Freeze and DAW Integration
Intuitive Instruments has announced a major update for its Exquis MPE controller. The new firmware 2.2.0 release adds expressive performance features, deeper integration with popular DAWs, and workflow tools that strengthen Exquis’ position as one of the most forward-thinking MPE instruments available today.
Exquis, which won the “Commercial Hardware Product” category at the 2023 MIDI Innovation Awards, is built around a hexagonal grid of 61 backlit silicone keys that respond to strike force, pitch bend, modulation, and pressure. The design enables fluid melodic playing and chord progressions, with gestural control over multiple parameters at once. The compact, lightweight form factor integrates with hardware synths, modular rigs, and computer-based setups, making it a flexible choice for musicians across genres.

New Features for Performers and Producers
The firmware 2.2.0 update introduces MPE Key Freeze, a feature that allows players to lock the expressive state of any note or chord and sustain it indefinitely while moving on to other parts. Combined with the built-in arpeggiator, it creates evolving textures and layered performances that would otherwise be difficult to achieve live.
Additional improvements include a MIDI Score Display mode that turns Exquis into a visual score player, new pedal support via MIDI input, refined sensitivity curves, and enhanced handling of off-center key presses. Together, these updates make the instrument more expressive and accessible to a broader range of playing styles.
Timed with the firmware release, Intuitive Instruments has also introduced scripts that merge Exquis directly into workflows for Ableton Live, Bitwig Studio, and Reaper. The Ableton Live Remote Script transforms Exquis into a full controller for Session View while retaining its MPE touch. The DrivenByMoss scripts for Bitwig and Reaper extend deep track, device, and parameter control, keeping users focused on performance and composition without reaching for a mouse or trackpad.
Availability
Firmware 2.2.0 is available now as a free download for all Exquis owners. Exquis itself is offered in two versions: the Pure model at €299 / $299 and the Deluxe model at €349 / $349. Both models maintain the same expressive performance capabilities, compact footprint, and integration with the Exquis companion app on macOS and Windows.
With firmware 2.2.0, Exquis continues to evolve into more than a controller—it is shaping up to be a central hub for expressive electronic music, bridging performance, composition, and DAW integration in one portable package.
