Hyperdub announces new EP from Chicago footwork producer DJ Hank
Hyperdub is preparing the release of a new EP from footwork producer DJ Hank.
Spanning six tracks, ‘City Stars’ sees the Chicago-based artist channel R&B and Japanese ambient samples into the classic 160 BPM template of the footwork sound. ’80s Japanese music by artists such as Midori Takada and Mkwaju Ensemble are namechecked as influences on the EP’s two closing tracks, ‘Kiosko’ and ‘Mkwa’.
DJ Hank has previously released music on labels such as Teklife and LuckyMe, with ‘City Stars’ marking his debut for Hyperdub. He was introduced to footwork after moving to Chicago from North Carolina, aged 18, and discovering the footwork battle night Battlegroundz.
Hyperdub label founder Kode9 has included a number of his productions in his DJ sets in recent years, with one appearing in the 2018 mix that he did with Burial for Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC radio.
‘City Stars’ is out on 25th February. You can listen to ‘Stay’ from the EP below.
The release of ‘City Stars’ follows on from Burial’s recent ‘ANTIDAWN’ EP on Hyperdub, which came out at the start of this month.
