PRPLE Explores Vulnerability and Growth on New Project ‘Heliotrope’

The plant turns toward the sun not because it has decided to, but because it has no other way of surviving. That involuntary orientation—the body finding the light before the mind has caught up—is a more accurate description of what Heliotrope is doing than any of the more considered explanations Prple offers for it. This is a record made in the dark, about the dark, by someone who was turning toward something without yet knowing what it was.

The seven tracks were produced entirely by 5five2, written and performed by Prple, and mixed across three different engineers. That dispersal of the finishing work suggests a project assembled in stages rather than conceived as a single session, which fits the material: Heliotrope is explicitly a document of an extended period rather than a single emotional state, a record of becoming rather than of having arrived.

The world Prple builds is dark, reflective, and sensual in the tradition of SZA and Jhené Aiko—alternative R&B that uses intimacy as a mode of excavation, where the personal and the vulnerable are not confessional but analytical. The question underneath every track is the one Prple poses directly: “how did I get here?” The project navigates themes of job insecurity, financial instability, the endings of relationships, familial responsibility, and the flux of physical and mental health.

Structural Coherence and Emotional Arc

What gives the project its structural coherence is the arc between its two anchor tracks. “Dwmt” opens the record on the principle of peace as a compass— “I seek peace in everything, that’s my decider of whether I leave or stay”—while “What It Wants,” the sixth track, pushes that principle toward its more demanding conclusion: that finding peace requires genuine submission to your own desires, the ones you haven’t yet been honest about. There are different attitudes throughout the project, ranging from hazed-out stoner tripping to fierce, femme fatale-inspired R&B.

Heliotrope is a debut that earns its own complexity.
