Serum 2 is Out Now: Everything You Need To Know About This Year’s Biggest Surprise Plugin Release
The plugin we never thought we’d get is out now: Serum 2 is here, 11 years after the release of the game changing original version.
Today, Xfer Records shocked the world by surprise releasing a sequel to Serum, the massively popular visual synthesizer that everybody and their mother has heard of at this point. It’s industry standard for a reason: it’s just that good. Now, there’s a whole new version of it to play with.
According to Xfer, Serum 2 takes the original plugin to new heights with some brand new oscillator types. For the very first time, producers can get involved with granular synthesis within Serum using the granulator oscillator – a change that I’m personally very excited for. There is also a a brand-new multisample oscillator that allows users to replicate realistic instruments in their synths, adding an entire new dimension to the once purely-digital synth. The last new oscillator is a spectral one; allowing harmonic-level sample processing. All three of these oscillators sound absolutely mind bending and I can’t wait to try them out.
For you wavetable and sampler fans, don’t worry; those oscillators are back now and better than ever. New warp modes, a smooth interpolation mode, and heavy upgrades to the sampler prove that you can still use Serum just as you did with the first version. There’s just far more to do in those modes now.
If that wasn’t enough, the team’s also added a new clip sequencer and an arpeggiator. Now, Serum isn’t just a groundbreaking wavetable synthesizer; it’s a full-on creative powerhouse.
However, I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet: it’s free for any and all Serum 1 owner. That’s right; if you own Serum, then you own Serum 2. You can jump into all of these new features right now, free of charge. Any presets you used or made in Serum will also work seamlessly in Serum 2, so no need to worry about having to re-make every sound you’ve made.
If you don’t own Serum, then now’s a great time to get it. It’s on sale for $189 USD until June 1. After that, it’ll return to its normal price of $250 USD. As a long-time Serum user, I wouldn’t hesitate to grab it while it’s on sale. It’s popular for a reason: Serum is one of the best synths on the market, and Serum 2 promises to take everything we all know and love about it to brand new heights.
