New podcast explores the history of New Zealand’s hip-hop scene
A new podcast exploring New Zealand’s hip hop scene is available now.
Titled Aotearoa Hip Hop: The Music, The People, The History, the 11-part podcast — presented by host Phil Bell AKA DJ Sir-Vere after three years in the making — takes a deep dive into the country’s hip hop scene, spanning 1980 to the present day and taking in over 100 interviews.
In the first six episodes, the podcast looks at the period between 1980 and 1996, beginning with the unknown story of DJ Tony ‘Teepee’ Pene and ending with the launch of Che Fu’s solo career. Extra commentary comes from key players in the NZ scene including David Dallas, Dawn Raid, P-Money, Ladi 6 and Savage, with the second season due to land early next year.
