New documentary looking at life and career of Carl Craig to hit UK cinemas this spring

A new documentary looking at the life and career of Detroit DJ, producer, and label head Carl Craig is set to hit silver screens across the UK and Ireland this spring.

DESIRE: The Carl Craig Story – which premiered at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival last year – is described as an “intimate portrait” of the legendary techno DJ, as well as an “ode to his beloved city, Detroit”.

A trailer for the film offers a sneak peek into the full 90-minute feature, which includes appearances from the likes of Moodymann, Laurent Garnier, Roni Size, Gilles Peterson, and more.

DESIRE is set to be released by Sovereign Films across the UK and Ireland on May 8 after making its UK debut at Glasgow Film Festival next month, followed by a Q&A with the documentary’s creators.

“The crew and I followed Carl all over the world at a breakneck pace,” explains director Jean-Cosme Delaloye. “We were afforded full access to an artist whose humility rivals his creativity.”

“We got to see the other side of the party, when the lights go out in the club and Carl only has a few hours to rest before heading to the next event,” he explained.

DESIRE chronicles the life of Carl Craig, from growing up in Detroit to earning fame and global recognition as a leading figure in the city’s techno scene through the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“At the pinnacle of his creative and deejaying success, the musician faces challenges that could ultimately force him to stay away from the dancefloor,” reads a synopsis.
