Jay Newman Breaks Down the Strategy Behind His Release on Where The Heart Is
When I heard Jay Newman was teaming up with Joshua Moreno for a release on Where The Heart Is, it immediately made sense. Both artists operate in that pocket of melodic and organic house where detail matters and emotional tone carries weight. Their new track “Longing” feels locked in—sonically and conceptually—and it’s one of those records that sits right in the heart of David Hohme’s catalog. It’s a strong look for Newman, especially after a consistent run of releases that have helped define his current style.
In this short interview, Jay shares a few reflections on what’s helped him stay on course creatively: from early studio mentorship with Reza, to mindset shifts that brought him clarity and traction after years of genre-hopping. He talks about how he picks his collabs, how he filters out short-term noise, and how landing on Where The Heart Is felt like a goal fulfilled.
The advice here is straightforward but solid—especially for producers trying to build with intention instead of chasing trends.

What’s one decision you made early on that saved you a lot of time or stress later in your career?
Early on in my music production career I invested in 20 x 1 to 1 music production lessons. I sat in the studio with my tutor Reza and we made tracks and I was able to be hands on while learning.
This really helped me and fast tracked my music production learning curve.
How do you approach releasing music now compared to when you first started?
I have found my sound now so I have a list of labels in my genre that I want to release my music with so I am much more targeted now.
What’s your filter for choosing collabs or remix opportunities?
I like to find artists with the same passion and dedication as mine and also produces a similar sound to me. This colab with Joshua was a perfect match.
How do you balance short-term algorithm pressure with long-term artist growth?
I just stay genuine and try to myself. I know if I put my maximum passion and effort into what I do then the growth steps with naturally happen!
What belief or mindset shift helped you stay consistent even when you weren’t getting much external validation?
I had this a few years ago, I was making all different sounds from tech house to minimal to melodic. I shifted my mind set and really focused on what I enjoy making and that is a mix of organic house, melodic and progressive.
Since focusing on this I feel more in control and the labels I’m releasing with now are really where I belong as a producer. Where The Heart Is was a target and now I can call it my home.
What do you wish more producers understood about building a sustainable career?
Make music that you love! Don’t try and be something you are not. Make a list of your target labels and decide on what sound you want to make and go make the magic happen!
