Jeff Mills Performs Live Score to Metropolis at Palace of Fine Arts
On March 7, Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills presents Cinemix: Metropolis Metropolis live at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, performing an original electronic score in real time to Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent masterpiece Metropolis.
One of only two U.S. presentations ever, the event marks a rare crossover moment for San Francisco’s arts calendar, bringing underground electronic music into one of the city’s most iconic cultural venues. A landmark of film history, Metropolis explores labor, class division, and the moral tension between humanity and technology. Nearly a century later, its themes remain strikingly relevant. Mills’ 2023 composition is his third distinct score for the film, conceived as a symphonic electronic work that deepens the film’s emotional and political resonance.
Staged at the Palace of Fine Arts, the performance reflects electronic music’s evolution from late-night club culture to seated concert experience, positioning techno within a formal arts setting. The presentation is part of Unabridged Weekender, produced by As You Like It (AYLI), a Bay Area electronic music platform that elevates underground artists through curated cultural programming.
The weekender includes:
- March 6 – 30-year ‘Live in the Liquid Room’ Anniversary DJ performance
- March 7 – ‘Metropolis Metropolis’ live score
- March 5–8 – Additional talks and programming
