EXIT Festival Announces Triumphant Return to Serbia

After announcing that it would no longer hold its flagship festival in Serbia, EXIT Festival has confirmed that it will return to its longtime home at Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad next July. This highly anticipated homecoming marks a significant chapter for the event, which has remained a cornerstone of the global electronic music scene for decades.

The announcement arrives just days after a historic election victory by Serbia’s student-led movement, following nearly two years of intense social and political advocacy. In response to the shifting landscape, EXIT shared the celebratory news with a promise for a special experience centered around the core values of “FREEDOM, UNITY, and LOVE.”

While the festival had originally planned a full-scale return for 2028 due to the immense logistical requirements of such a massive production, the overwhelming demand and support from their dedicated fan base have prompted organizers to launch a special July 2027 experience. This event will serve as a bridge to their full-scale 2028 reopening.

A Legacy of Activism and Cultural Impact

EXIT Festival was notably the only major Serbian festival to publicly support the student protests that emerged following a tragic November 1, 2024, incident at the Novi Sad railway station. The collapse of a concrete canopy, which claimed 16 lives, served as a catalyst for citizens to organize and demand accountability regarding widespread corruption. Founded in 2000 as a student movement rooted in democracy and peace, the festival has always maintained a deep connection to social activism.

Last year, organizers cited mounting political, security, and financial pressures as the primary reasons for halting operations in Serbia. During this hiatus, the festival successfully expanded its footprint internationally, hosting events in Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Despite this global success, the pull of their historic venue remained strong.

While specific details regarding the 2027 programming are still under wraps, the return to Petrovaradin Fortress signals a powerful reclamation of the festival’s identity. Fans can look forward to a special experience in 2027, followed by a full-scale return to form in 2028.
