Johan Gielen Revives Airscape Moniker for Emotional New Album ‘Etherflow’

After three decades of shaping the trance landscape with his unmistakable energy, Johan Gielen has stepped forward once again under his celebrated Airscape alias to deliver a stunning new full-length album. Titled Etherflow, the project serves as a heartfelt tribute to his long-time friend and tour manager, Robert Sanders, blending delicate soundscapes with the driving force that has defined Gielen’s career.

It has been nearly two decades since Gielen released a full-length studio album under his own name, with Revelations arriving back in 2006. Following his return to the Airscape moniker for the A Search for Sunrise mix in 2024, Etherflow marks a significant creative milestone. The album opens with lush, atmospheric synths on the title track before Sarah Anglionin elevates the energy on the euphoric Invincible. The emotional core of the project is found in Beach Pearl [Robert’s Theme], a poignant dedication to his late friend that mirrors the ebb and flow of ocean waves.

“Losing Robert broke me for a long while. For a decade we toured the world and saw it together, and his passing came out of nowhere. With hindsight, I see I went into the studio to try to process some of that pain. To try to ‘write it off my chest’ in some fashion. From there, the album became a broader meditation of life’s ups and downs—the highs, the lows, but as well, the ‘in-betweens’ we’re often not grateful enough for. It’s about growing up in dance music and oddly the twenty years of perspective between ‘Revelations’ and ’Etherflow’ was an incredible benefit to writing it. Ultimately though, this one’s for Robert—it’s how I expressed my grief, without words.”-Johan Gielen

Throughout the album, Gielen demonstrates his mastery of the trance genre. Tracks like Love From Above and Piano Del Sol emphasize the life-affirming power of dance music. The album also features a collaborative spirit, with Airscape joining forces with Daniel Wanrooy, Gid Sedgwick, Arkayne, and Shakespeakers to create a rich, collective atmosphere. Songs such as Ecstatica, Healing, and Nordic Chant are meticulously structured to drive emotional intensity to its peak.

“Etherflow represents the natural, continuous movement of universal energy—an invisible current that connects every being, thought, and element of existence in a harmonious manner.”-Johan Gielen

The final act of the album features the radio-ready track Satellites, featuring Shakespeakers, followed by the instrumental powerhouse Marula Sunset, a collaboration with Pierre Pienaar. The collection concludes with Circles and All Of Me For All Of You, the latter featuring a powerful vocal performance by Katie Sky that centers on themes of love and compassion.

“Always, I have believed that artist albums need a purpose and that purpose can’t simply be feeding the industry machine or the bi-annual expectations of a fanbase.”-Johan Gielen

With Etherflow, Johan Gielen has poured his soul into fourteen tracks, offering a powerful testament to an artist who remains untethered by industry pressures. Whether serving as a touching tribute or a high-energy force for the dancefloor, the music on Etherflow is designed to ignite and inspire.
