Jevon Discusses the Creative Vision Behind His Hit Single ‘Third Eye’
Southern California-based artist Jevon has captured the attention of listeners worldwide with his widely acclaimed single, “Third Eye.” Produced by MVTCHES and featured on his latest album, Black First, the track has quickly become a defining moment in his career. For Jevon, the song serves as a powerful introduction to his versatile sound, bridging the gap between his various influences.
“Third Eye is the highest reviewed and best received song I have,” Jevon explains. “As an artist, it’s always difficult to present just one song to a listener because they won’t understand that I actually create Hip-Hop in all the sub-genres, from the 90’s golden era to trap. But this song is so good that it brings listeners to want to check out my entire catalog.” He also credits the production, noting, “The track was produced by a kid who goes by MVTCHES. Shout out to him; it’s one of the best beats I’ve ever heard.”
Jevon’s path to success has been marked by a commitment to his craft, honed through years of moving between different cultural landscapes. Having spent his formative years in both California and Mississippi, he eventually settled in Alhambra, a city in Los Angeles County that played a pivotal role in his development. “I moved around a lot and lived in different cities in Cali and Mississippi. But I spent most of my time in Alhambra, which is a really nice city with a high Asian population. I grew up within a melting pot of cultures, and I learned to understand them all,” he reflects.
His introduction to music began early, fueled by the sounds of Hip-Hop echoing through his home and his father’s car. While he initially explored the culture through DJing at age 13, the allure of the instrumental side of the records he owned eventually pushed him toward songwriting. “Me and my best friend Pak Man got a hold of a cheap USB mic and started recording, and it was history from there,” he says.
As a self-described perfectionist, Jevon refuses to be boxed into a single sub-genre. Whether he is working on boom-bap or modern trap, his focus remains on the quality of the final product. “When I hear a beat I like, I write to it no matter what category it is. I’m a perfectionist, so the end result is always fire,” he notes. “My music seems to resonate with all different cultures of people, young and old, which I consider a blessing. Stay tuned in—I’ve been in the studio working, and I have some songs featuring major artists coming very, very soon.”
