Stormzy joins protest demanding justice for Chris Kaba

Protesters gathered outside Scotland Yard on Saturday (10 September) demanding justice for Chris Kaba, who was fatally shot by the police last week.

The 24 year-old, who was a member of rap group 67, was killed by an armed police officer on 5 September following a car chase in Streatham, south London. Kaba was unarmed and, following calls from his family to hold the officers involved to account, the Met Police has launched an investigation and are treating Kaba’s death as a homicide.

This past weekend, protesters marched through central London for Kaba and in support of his family. Stormzy made an appearance to show solidarity and also gave a short speech during the protest. “I was very hesitant to come up here because I know, a lot of the time, even with my name, they try and turn it into this other thing and use my name to try and make it about me, but it’s nothing about me,” the rapper said.

“It’s about us, it’s about the family, it’s about everyone grieving,” Stormzy continued. “Chris has a mother, he has a family, he has brothers, he has friends, people who knew him their whole life, for them this is unbearable.” He went on to encourage everyone to “keep going because the family needs you.”
