David Cloyd Releases Remixes of Standout Album Cut “Cage Of Water”
David Cloyd’s return to the wider indie music conversation has unfolded with unusual clarity and momentum. It’s clear that his hiatus only fueled him further.
After more than a decade away from the album format, “Red Sky Warning” marked a decisive reintroduction, earning prominent editorial support on Apple Music alongside artists such as St. Vincent, U2, The Cure, Bon Iver, and My Morning Jacket. More importantly, it reconnected Cloyd with a global audience, reestablishing his voice as one shaped by patience, reflection, and precision rather than trends or volume.
That renewed focus now extends into “Cage of Water [Remixes]“, a four-track EP that pairs Cloyd with producer, remixer, and The Heroic Enthusiasts frontman James Tabbi, shifting an original standout from the album through different filters. Rather than offering superficial reinterpretations, the EP treats remixing as a form of close reading. The original track sits alongside three distinct reimaginings, each pulling at different emotional and rhythmic threads while preserving the song’s core tension.
Tabbi’s involvement feels particularly apt. His own work, described as “suave, synth-driven Britpop that shimmers with nostalgia and radiates with eternal appeal,” shares Cloyd’s interest in atmosphere and restraint. For example, in his “Drop of Red Remix,” Tabbi builds outward from the song’s Tresillo rhythm, reinforcing its hypnotic pulse with Dumbak percussion and subtle electronic framing. The remix does not overwrite the original; rather, it amplifies its sense of confinement and longing, translating metaphor into motion.
For Cloyd, that metaphor is grounded in lived experience. Written during the early, sleep-deprived years of parenthood, “Cage of Water” draws directly from a moment of quiet recognition: watching sharks circle behind aquarium glass and seeing his own sense of dislocation reflected back. The remixes preserve that emotional truth, approaching it from different angles without diluting its impact.

Mastered by Blake Morgan, co-producer of the original track and founder of ECR Music Group, the EP underscores the label’s long-standing commitment to collaboration as a creative engine. These remixes are not a detour from “Red Sky Warning”, but a continuation of its themes, proving that reinvention can be both expansive and deeply attentive.
