In June 2021, Grimes began to tease a new track entitled Shinigami Eyes. Last night (26 January), the Miss Anthropocene artist released the single alongside a futuristic music video directed by Brthr.
The new visual features cameos from Blackpink’s Jennie Kim as well as Dorian Electra and Ryon Wu. Grimes called Jennie her “favourite” pop star in a recent Instagram post. Additionally, in a reply comment to a fan, Grimes said: “I’ve never seen such a pure talent on a set everyone was like wtf she’s so good at performing.”
The track’s title references Japanese manga series Death Note, as well as the time Grimes claimed to have undergone experimental eye film surgery. The artist discussed the song in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I love the record, but it’s just like, everyone’s like, what’s the deeper meaning?” said Grimes. “And it’s like, well, Nino Angelo just really had just watched Death Note and really liked it. Basically, I wrote the whole space opera thing and this is the only song that wasn’t this big narrative plot.”
As Pitchfork reports, Shinigami Eyes will feature on an EP entitled Fairies Cum First – a “prelude” to Grimes’ forthcoming double album Book 1. Grimes’ next record will be the follow-up to 2020’s Miss Anthropocene. It will also her first full-length release for her new label Columbia Records.
Earlier this month, the former Crack Magazine cover star revealed that she’s also been working on a different record that’s devoted entirely to nightcore. The 35-track album has supposedly been in the works since 2015. On the project, Grimes said: “I don’t think it makes a ton of sense but it’s getting so absurdly long lol.” [sic]
