A fresh quarterly event series is set to debut at Village Underground Barcelona on Saturday, November 28. Created in partnership with Casa Drassanes, the project, titled Ecch-Ode: Perspectives in Sound, marks a significant return for two legendary figures in the techno scene, as both Dave Angel and Drivetrain make their first appearances in the city in over a decade.
While Barcelona remains a global hub for techno, the organizers behind Ecch-Ode identified a gap in the local circuit: the absence of veteran artists who were instrumental in defining the genre's early trajectory. By pairing these foundational architects with current local talent like 4R15 and Francisco B, the series aims to bridge the gap between historical influence and modern-day progression.
The inaugural event also serves as a showcase for Dave Angel’s latest full-length album, A Time And Place, released via R&S Records. His history with the label dates back to 1991, following a pivotal introduction to founder Renaat Vandepapeliere. This new record highlights Angel’s evolution as an artist, drawing heavily from the jazz and soul influences of his upbringing. The production features collaborations with trumpeter Steve Waterman, guitarist Merv Carswell, vocalist Robert Owens, and Angel’s daughter, Aurii Sky.
Joining him is Detroit’s own Derrick Thompson, widely known as Drivetrain. As the mastermind behind Soiree Records International, Thompson has spent over 30 years as a pillar of the Detroit underground, fostering a diverse soundscape that encompasses house, techno, and experimental electronic music.
“Both Dave and Drivetrain have played a significant part in the development of techno, yet neither has featured on Barcelona’s line-ups in recent years,” the Ecch-Ode team explained. “That’s really the starting point for the series: making space for artists who helped shape this music, and giving people in the city the chance to hear them again.”
Beyond the dancefloor, the organizers intend for Ecch-Ode to function as an educational platform. The series plans to host four events annually, incorporating discussions on the history of electronic music and community-driven initiatives to ensure the heritage of the scene is preserved and shared with new generations.
Tickets for the opening event at Village Underground are currently available through DICE. The organizers view this as a long-term commitment to the local scene, aiming to foster growth and provide meaningful contributions to Barcelona's cultural landscape.
