Last year, London-founded online radio station No Signal launched an academy for young Black creatives. The first NS Academy guided participants through the “how-to’s” of the industry, with leading figures from radio, graphic design and social media backgrounds, among others, involved in the initiative. Each participant received £1,000 to take part in the academy.
The 14-week programme concluded with an NS Academy takeover on No Signal. Dubbed Summer Wheel Up, the day-long celebration saw the academy’s first class of participants curating and programming shows and content for the station. The collective was provided with a budget of £3,00 to go towards their takeover.
Now, No Signal is sharing a new documentary on the events of Summer Wheel Up. Produced by videographer and NS Academy member Akeem Mushini, the hour-long film offers a behind the scenes glimpse into what occurred on the day.

The NS Academy is supported by Youth Music’s Incubator Fund. The fund was launched to “help open up access to sustainable careers in music for people aged 18-25, particularly those who are underrepresented; and to support creative employers to innovate and incubate new and diverse talent.”
We caught up with No Signal co-founder David Sonubi for The Collections, Vol. 1. Speaking on the station’s inception, Sonubi said: “Before everyone knew No Signal as a radio station, we were known as a collective – some of us worked for labels, some in PR, some already DJs. But I’d say No Signal really represents culture as a whole. You speak to the average person nowadays, and they’ve either heard about or locked into No Signal. We’re real, we’re out there.”
