Richard McMaster’s latest project, “Fianna,” emerged from a deep-seated fascination with Irish history, mythology, and the creative evolution sparked by his previous work with Magnetic Magazine. What began as a two-track EP inspired by the Tuatha Dé Danann and the ancient site of Newgrange eventually blossomed into a collaborative single, marking a significant milestone in his artistic journey. The track, which carries the weight of Irish mythological tradition, reflects a shift toward a more atmospheric and introspective sound—a direct result of the slower, more deliberate pace McMaster has adopted in his life.

The release has already garnered attention within the progressive and melodic music scenes, finding its way into playlists by The Grande Sound and sets by industry stalwarts like Anthony Pappa and Viktor. Despite this early momentum, McMaster remains focused on the emotional resonance of his work rather than the pressure of peak-time club utility. His upcoming album, arriving July 24, promises to further explore this intersection of local history, natural surroundings, and personal reflection.

For McMaster, the transition from the fast-paced environment of Liverpool to a quiet cottage setting has been transformative. He describes his current lifestyle as a deliberate move toward a more grounded existence. “Outside the studio, I have learned to appreciate and draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings,” he explains. Whether he is walking through fields and forests with his daughter or capturing the ambient sounds of nature, these experiences have become integral to his production process.

This connection to his environment extends to his intellectual interests, which include a deep curiosity about science, space, and the distant past of Ireland. When asked about the pressures of the industry, McMaster is candid about the pitfalls of tying self-worth to metrics like Beatport rankings or gig frequency. “Early on, I think most people will associate a sense of value with whether tracks are getting plays,” he admits. However, he has since shifted his focus toward finding joy in the process itself. For him, the true reward lies in the technical challenges of production and the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.

Maintaining a healthy relationship with music production now involves setting clear boundaries. McMaster emphasizes the importance of routine and intentionality, moving away from the burnout associated with endless, goal-less hours in the studio. “It is a privilege to sit down and explore musical ideas each day,” he says. By prioritizing his mental and physical well-being—often through simple acts like taking a 20-minute walk to clear his head—he ensures that his creative output remains authentic and sustainable. This balance between life and art is, ultimately, what drives his continued growth as a producer.
